I looked up this incident and came across this gem of a quote from Marius Els, the deceased in question:

"They think you can only have a relationship with dogs, cats and domestic animals, but I have a relationship with the most dangerous animal in Africa."

Are were you, perhaps, an idiot?

Might be too hard of an ask, and obviously it's a wild animal, but do you have any insights to the story about a hippo eating it's 'owner' after six+ years of companionship? It just seems like something would have triggered that violence right? I feel like animals don't just randomly kill their group mates but I don't know much about hippos.
